January 2006

W e are hosting the RAANZ National Flyin this year.  We will be rising to the occasion to make it the best flyin ever.

To do this we need your help. The committee is well on the way to organising the events for the weekend of March 4th and 5th .The itinerary will be something like this ;

Saturday 4th 8-10am - Registration

10-1pm- Local Tiki Tour

1-2 pm - Lunch

2-5pm - Navigation Exercise

7pm- BBQ meal

Sunday 5th 7-8am - Breakfast

9-1pm - Local Competitions

1-2pm - Lunch

  1. 4pm - poker Run

7pm - Prize giving and Dinner

We need your support by attending the event and helping with the competitions and any other jobs that may arise. Please call me on 327 6448 if you can help.

Camping is available on site and we hope those of you with camper vans and busses will park up at the airfield.

Members attending is what makes events a success or failure. Even the weather can’t dampen the spirit. So come along and make the most of it. Get into the spirit.

Mark up your calendar and make this a great weekend. If you have any ideas please give me a call. If you are a businessman and can offer some sponsorship we would only be too pleased to accept your help. Sponsorship is an opportunity for you to put forward your services to a group of people that may benefit from your service . If they benefit so do you . Sponsorship can take many forms from supplying goods with your details on to supplying a trophy for a competition to a cash donation, pens, paper, maps, photocopying etc. Again call myself or Paul Woodley.

We already have generous donations from Steve Noad at Aircraft Logistics, Ivan Campbell at Aero Classics and Craig Thomas.

Our new RANS S6 tail dragger is coming along well with the fuse and wings being almost complete. We have slowed the construction down a little as the income generated by JOL has diminished because of the poor flying weather.

JOL will have clocked up 600hrs by the time you read this and this means a new engine and a though inspection including replacement of wing bolts, aileron cables, engine mount bolts etc.

We are also going to refurbish the covering with an additive that should help in protecting the skins from further deterioration. She could be out of the air for around 10 days from 13th February to around 23rd. So get in some time before then.

JOL has proven to be very reliable and popular .It has had very few maintenance issues and continues to look like new. Well done to all who fly her and thanks to Paul who does a great job in maintaining her.

So ,What’s Happening Out There?

Rex Woods has bought Dave Small’s D9 ‘The Barron’ (ex Barrie Gurdler) he has sold the Cub to xxxxxxxx.

Welcome new members- Grant Porter, Maxim Vassilier, Winston Harris and Graeme Readman. I hope the club can help you fulfill your desire to fly. Contact myself or any instructor should you have any questions. Mike Sheffield.

Mike Small has Kara No1 back in the air after fitting of more horses and a new sharp paint trim.

Simon Eden is getting some encouragement to complete his Kara No3 and is having to fight of burglars to do it. See article later in newsletter

Meanwhile Kara No2 in the hands of Dave McPherson is clocking up the hours and wind seems to be no problem to the big bird .

Chris Pennell has had a little problem with the spinny thing on the front stopping at the most inopportune time and caused his Hi-Max to shed a part or two. Both himself and Bevan were only mildly damaged and both have been seen back in the air. Well done Chris on an excellent landing and getting back in the saddle. We hope to see the plane back in the air better than it was in the near future.

Wayne Woodward has been clocking up the hours in his Bantam and loves it . Good to see a few of these in the club.

Ivan Campbell’s Tiger has flown in the hands of Evan Bellworthy and goes very well. Some minor trimming was required and a prop change saw the 2nd flight with more performance. As the days pass Ivan will fine tune and will soon take to the air himself.

Good job Ivan and the Aero Classics team

Child Cancer Air Fest- Methven Racecourse

This event is being held by the child cancer society to raise funds.

The event takes the form of an air festival with as many types of aeronautical activity represented as possible. We have been invited to attend and bring as many planes as possible. We will either land at the racecourse or the local airstrip. It is a fund raiser for Child Cancer but also a chance for us to promote ourselves with a display and trial flights. Please put this date on your calendar and lets get as many planes down there as possible.

Kara Kidnapping

The plan was hatched!

The bi-spectacled man turned to the Smaller man ‘I’ve got it . I know where we can get the parts we need ‘

The Smaller man looked confused, some say this is normal, and asked ‘how we gonn’a do that ?’

Easy said the bi-spectacled gent. My truck and your trailer and we will have it here in no time ‘

The plan was discussed in detail and the Smaller man took notes ,as his memory retention was not his best trait. After a pre - kidnapping briefing the two likely lads climbed into the Blue 4 wheel truck cleverly disguised as a local contractors vehicle.

They waited until darkness ,fell around 10 pm, being the middle of summer, and headed into the night.

The two sat in silence as the truck bumped along the long straight road to their destination. Car headlights illuminated the two as they looked at each other .both wondering if they were doing the right thing. They knew if this was not done no progress on K3 was imminent . They both knew that they must move for the good of the movement and for the good of the group. It must be done. They concentrated on the task ahead knowing that the common bond between them and the group would see them through .

They turned of the road to the right ,followed the silvery river to the bridge and made their way to the darkly lit street where their prey lay in a small single car garage at the end of a narrow driveway.

Stop here and I will see if the coast is clear’ said the Smaller man. He disappeared into the darkness as the driver turned off the car lights. A minute later he came back a little out of breath as he was not used to the tension of the moment . The bi-spectacled man turned the truck around and backed it carefully up the narrow driveway with the Smaller man giving directions. No lights showed on the truck and only finely tuned skill enabled the drive to get to the destination without hitting the fence or disturbing the neighbours.

The got out of the truck and slowly closed the door.

It’s that door there ‘ whispered the Smaller man .He moved the door opening after inserting the key and it opened. Very slowly and noislessly the door fully opened above them revealing their prey.

Get the torch ‘ and I will let the ramp down on the trailer . Don’t forget the tie downs as well’ said the bi-spectacled man.

The K3 was moved noiselessly from the room on it’s wheels until the rear appendage ,not bolted on , fell onto the concrete floor with a clattering bell like noise. The both stood motionless and watched the neighbouring house for signs of movement.

That was bloody close ‘the Smaller man said as he picked up the metal structure and put in the back of the truck.

Slowly they moved the K3 onto the trailer and tied it down. After loading the last of the other loose structures into the truck the door was closed and they jumped into the truck.

The bi-spectacled man turned the ignition key and the truck burst into life. With a cautious look at the neighbours house they eased the truck down the narrow drive with their booty in hand.

Suddenly they were faced by a blinding light and the truck came to an abrupt halt to avoid collision with a vehicle directly in front of them.

Oh S*** ‘ said the Smaller man,’ Caught red handed ‘

A figure appeared at the drivers window.

What the Hell do you think you are doing ?

Finishing the job you started. We can’t wait any longer for you to finish it so we thought we would take it and finish it ourselves’ said the Driver of the blue truck ,cleverly disguised as a local contractor. The Smaller man , next to the driver, had a big grin on his dial ,as he so often does, said ‘You’re not supposed to be here ‘

Well I am . Get it off and put it back in the garage. I am going to finish it myself. How did you get in’?

You gave me the key, remember’?

oh Yea ‘said the K3 owner, well give it back and bugger off. I will get onto it don’t worry’.

The truck backed up the drive and unloaded the K3 back into the garage.

The di-spectacled man and his Smaller sidekick bundled them selves back into the truck cleverly disguised as a local contractor with their tails between their legs and made their way home.

Moral of the story ‘you can’t have your Kara1 and Kara 2 and a KARATOO 3’.

All subjects and story line is completely fictitious eh boy’s.
